Jamie held Dane in his arms and stewed. She was not as asleep as she had been, but she was still out. Pi said she didn’t sleep long normally and that she would wake soon. She said that she would have a headache for a couple of days, but otherwise be fine. He wanted her awake now and without the headache. He kissed her forehead again.

When his mother and brother came in, Damon looked at Dane then at Devin. Devin walked to his brother and held him. It would be all right between them.

“I’m sorry, Jamie.” Damon hugged him too. “I don’t want anything to happen to either of them. I don’t understand what she can do, but Mom said she’s brilliant and that without her she wouldn’t have been able to solve the murder of three children. I’m really sorry. I love you guys so much and I don’t want—”

“I won’t hurt your family, Dr. Grant,” Dane said as she sat up. “Never. I’m really tired and if you guys don’t mind, I’d like to go home.”

“Yeah, about that. There’s a slight problem with you going home, Mrs…Dr…Dane.” Captain Tucker smiled at them as he continued. “I just got a call from one of my officers and it seems you’ve had a break in. The place has been trashed and nothing was left untouched. I’m just on my way there now. If you’d like to wait until in the morning, I understand. It’ll still be there.”
